It is important to do your part to keep your teeth and gums healthy between visits to your family dentist. Cleaning your teeth and gums prevents a wide range medical problems. Cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss are painful experiences that you can easily prevent by making sure you have a regular oral hygiene routine. Read on to learn about the key aspects of a good oral hygiene routine and why they are important.

  • Brush Your Teeth

Brush teeth twice a day with a fluoride tooth paste. American Dental Association-approved toothpaste is preferable to insure the best care. Brush at a 45-degree angle from gums. Make light tooth-sized brush strokes. This will prevent the plaque from forming on your teeth and help you avoid tooth decay.

  • Clean Your Tongue

Brush your tongue to eliminate unwanted bacteria. This is an easy step to overlook, but it is important for a clean mouth and makes a big difference when it comes to fresh breath.

  • Floss Regularly

This is another important step that is easy to forget. Flossing regularly cleans the areas toothbrushes can't reach and helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Do not snap the floss into your gums. Be sure to use an unused section of floss when flossing each space.

  • Rinse Your Mouth

This step will help to ensure that you have fresh breath and that your mouth is free of harmful food particles. It is a good idea to rinse as often as possible, especially if you have recently eaten and do not have the opportunity to brush your teeth. If your dentist approves, it may be a good idea to use mouthwash regularly.
